Sound

Start quietly, then adjust the system volume. Sound only starts with the speaker button in a module. A limiter at the output catches level peaks. In the harmonic series the level refers to the RMS value: if you flip individual phases, the waveform changes a lot but the sound hardly at all.

Level calibration (dB SPL)

Applies to the modules “Decibels and phons” and “Masking and masked threshold”. The level ratios between the tones are always right, the absolute dB SPL values only after calibration: play the calibration tone and set the reference or the system volume so that a sound level meter at the headphones or listening position reads 94 dB. Do not change the volume afterwards. Without calibration and with arbitrary headphones, the threshold of hearing and the isophones are only approximate.

MIDI keyboard

Applies to the harmonic series: a key sets the fundamental f₀, the sound plays while it is held. With several keys the last one pressed wins. Pitch bend detunes by up to ±2 semitones. The setting is remembered; a keyboard plugged in later is detected automatically.

Decibels and phons

Compare sound pressure level and perceived loudness in the equal-loudness diagram: drag tones, change the level, read phon and sone.

Equal-loudness contours (ISO 226)

Drag the tones; a click on an empty spot moves the selected tone there. Dotted contour sections lie outside the range of the standard.

A mix that sounds balanced at reference 1 is played back quieter or louder by the difference. The filled curve shows by how many phon each frequency then seems quieter or louder than 1 kHz; the dashed curve shows the EQ that restores the sound of reference 1.
